I also have a outlet down there in the basement switching on with the room lights to power the low voltage undercabinet lights (she would never turn them at the wall switch on so I made them mandatory). I have a flex conduit for low voltage running from a box under where the screen will go to the basement (was for cable TV coax when I had a TV there to entertain the kids during breakfasts when they were small). I thought the 5:4 monitor was going to make this easy, since it uses a 12V power brick. Yes a motion detector could work, but would be ugly. Next part of the project is to have the screen only come on when the kitchen lights are on. ![]() Yay! it's functioning perfectly from my Hotmail storage, if suffering from heavily letterboxed verticals. But there WAS an 3rd party app available to play pics stored on MS free storage like Onedrive. So I hooked the stick to a 22" 16:9 TV I had, no splitter required, and it works! Except that it turns out the Amazon Photo Slideshow app sucks big time, has few controls, and they won't let 3rd party apps developers access the API for their Photo storage. Doing it with a Raspberry Pi also seems possible, but learning that system would be quite a time sink and more cash. I could ditch it and get a PC on a stick, but that's like $150. I wanted the 5:4 because a lot of the pics are verticals, and most of the horizontals are 4:3 anyway. Terrible, and no way around it that I can see with the FireTV device. Apparently the FireTV is too dumb or stubborn to adapt to the aspect ratio of the monitor as a PC would, so the screen is simply compressed horizontally so the 16:9 image it generates fits. Yay!Ģnd big problem was aspect ratio with the 5:4 monitor I wanted to use. I bought a $20 HDMI splitter that has the added feature of stripping out HDCP. I had read the stick could stream pics from my Amazon Prime account via wifi.ġst big problem was the old monitor couldn't show the signal because of HDCP non-compliance. I have several old 19" monitors and small TVs, and I bought an Amazon FireTV stick for $20. Project is an anniversary present for the wife of a large digital photo frame for the kitchen.
